This study evaluated whether supplementing goats with Ascophyllum nodosum extract could help mitigate the physiological and oxidative stress associated with transport and pre-slaughter conditions.
While the seaweed extract did not significantly alter cortisol (stress hormone) levels, it delivered clear metabolic benefits. Supplemented goats showed reduced lipid peroxidation (lower oxidative damage) and increased antioxidant enzyme activity, characterized by significantly higher glutathione peroxidase levels.
These findings indicate that seaweed supplementation helps goats better cope with stress at the cellular level, supporting immune function during challenging handling and transport events.
