Effects of Edible Treats Containing Ascophyllum nodosum on the Oral Health of Dogs: A Double-Blind Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Single-Center Study

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effects of daily edible treats containing Ascophyllum nodosum on oral health in dogs over a 90-day period. Following professional dental cleaning, dogs receiving the treated bites showed significantly lower plaque and calculus accumulation compared to the control group. Improvements were also observed in halitosis-related compounds (volatile sulfur compounds), gingival bleeding, and overall oral health status. While some measures, such as the Oral Health Index, did not always reach statistical significance, consistent trends favored the treatment group across all parameters. Importantly, the supplement was well tolerated and produced no adverse health effects. The findings provide strong evidence - based on a rigorous clinical design - that A. nodosum can serve as an effective adjunct to routine dental care, helping to slow the progression of periodontal disease and maintain oral hygiene in dogs.
