This review examines the use of seaweeds - particularly brown species - in pig diets, focusing on growth, gut health, immunity, and nutrient utilization. Across multiple studies analyzed, seaweed supplementation (especially laminarin- and fucoidan-rich extracts) showed positive effects on growth performance, with increases in average daily gain ranging from modest to substantial depending on the stage of production and supplement type.
Beyond growth, seaweeds played a key role in improving intestinal health and digestibility. They function as prebiotics, modulating beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium while helping control pathogens like E. coli. This microbial modulation enhances nutrient absorption, increases short-chain fatty acid production, and supports gut morphology (e.g., increased villi height).
Additionally, seaweed supplementation improved antioxidant status and reduced inflammation, contributing to stronger immune function. These combined effects make seaweeds particularly valuable during critical stages such as weaning, where pigs are more vulnerable to stress and disease.
