This study evaluated the inclusion of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum in milk replacer for pre-weaning calves over a 42-day trial. Results showed no differences in growth performance or feed intake between treated and control groups, but calves receiving seaweed experienced a significant reduction in moderate diarrhea cases.
In addition, treated calves showed differences in metabolic indicators, including higher levels of albumin, calcium and phosphorus, and lower cholesterol levels - parameters linked to better health status and nutrient metabolism.
These benefits are attributed to the seaweed’s rich composition of bioactive compounds and minerals that support gut health.
